LGC has been providing genotyping services driven by KASP™ for over 10 years.

Advances in molecular technology and genome programmes are creating a wealth of information that can be exploited for the genetic improvement of plants and animals. High-throughput genotyping allows direct selection on marker information based on population-widestudies . Variety/breed confirmation can be achieved using defined assays.

At LGC we are keen to apply our technologies in practical breeding programmes. Our cost-effective technology offers a predictable and sustainable way to make genetic advances using MAS. In addition, as our technologies are not gel-based, they are not labour intensive or time consuming.

Sample QC / QA in action

Great effort has been put into the development of molecular marker maps in the livestock sector. The first reported map in livestock was for chicken in 1992, which was quickly followed by the publication of maps for cattle, pigs and sheep. Since then, the search for useful markers has continued and further species have been targeted, including goat, horse, rabbit and turkey.

Hy-Line International has been using LGC's technology in research to create the highest standard of commercial layer to not only produce the strongest egg, but also to improve liveability, feed efficiency, nesting behaviour and persistency of lay. Alongside this, the research could help farmers adhere to the global industry regulations by creating higher egg yield from fewer hens, therefore creating space in farms.

Why KASP genotyping chemistry?

The KASP genotyping assay utilises a unique form of competitive allele-specific PCR that delivers high levels of assay and accuracy, whilst ensuring cost savings. The technology enables highly accurate bi-allelic scoring of SNPs at specific loci across a wide range of genomic DNA samples. The benefit for Hy-Line’s research was KASP’s ability for rapid SNP testing while still producing highly accurate results.
