Reference material production
LGC uses its expertise as the UK's National Measurement Laboratory (NML, designated for chemical and bio-measurement) to develop internationally-recognised measurement standards that are used as benchmarks in analytical laboratories.
Our scientists are at the forefront of measurement science and use the latest state-of-the-art measurement methods and instrumentation to develop and produce reference materials that underpin complex measurements.
Many of the analytical methods used to characterise the reference materials are accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 (General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories) and have been verified through participation on key comparison studies organised by the Consultative Committee for the Amount of Substance (CCQM) of the International Weights and Measures Organisation (BIPM).
The reference material production is accredited to ISO Guide 34 (General requirements for the competence of reference material producers) and the certificates are recognised by other National Measurement Institutes, under the Mutual Recognition Arrangement.
LGC is a founder member of the European Reference Material
(ERM®) co-operation established in 2004, along with the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurement (IRMM) in Belgium and Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und Prüfung (BAM) in Germany. ERM® members are committed to using the most advanced principles for the production of certified reference materials; providing certified values with clearly defined and stated traceability; and providing transparency of their approaches for the production of certified reference materials.
