Good practice guides

With support from the UK National Measurement System, LGC has produced a range of good practice guides on quality assurance and on measurement techniques such as mass spectrometry and qPCR.
These guides are available to download using the links below.
FIRMS-good-practice-guide-2nd-ed.png Good practice guide for isotope ratio mass spectrometr (second edition)
This updated guide, produced by members of the Forensic Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (FIRMS) Steering Group, aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the many and diverse processes involved in generating Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS) data, the quality control of these data and in their interpretation.
Molecular-biology-guide-cover-png.jpg Practical laboratory skills for molecular biologists
This guide covers basic laboratory skills and other measures required to produce valid results in a molecular biology laboratory.
Guide to achieving reliable quantitative LC-MS measurements
This RSC Analytical Methods Committee LC-MS guide brings together practical advice to assist users of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) in avoiding many common problems in developing reliable, quantitative applications as quickly and cheaply as possible.
Good practice guide for the application of quantitative PCR (qPCR)
The guide aims to assist those who are, or will be, using qPCR by discussing the issues that need consideration during experimental design. The guide includes “tried and tested” approaches, and troubleshoots common issues.
Glycoanalysis best practice guide
This best practice guide details the practical evaluation of different characterisation methods, broken down into sections for glycoproteins, glycopeptides, glycans and monosaccharides.
Laboratory skills training handbook
The aim of this handbook is to provide a basic training package in key laboratory skills and an introduction to important quality topics.
Best practice guide for generating mass spectra
The guide takes the user, step-by-step, through the process of generating mass spectra that are fit for purpose.
Meeting the traceability requirements of ISO 17025: An analysts guide This guide provides essential practical advice to analysts and laboratory managers on how to establish the traceability of their results to reliable and appropriate measurement standards. Following the guidance given here should ensure compliance with the traceability requirements of ISO 17025.
Preparation of calibration curves: A guide to best practice
The aim of this guide is to highlight good practice in setting up calibration experiments, and to explain how the results should be evaluated.
Qualitative analysis: A guide to best practice. Forensic Science Extension
This extension to the Guide addresses issues specific to forensic science.
