National Measurement Laboratory welcomes new Bioeconomy Strategy

The National Measurement Laboratory (NML), hosted at LGC, welcomes the long-awaited Bioeconomy Strategy, Growing the Bioeconomy, that was released yesterday.

The strategy is a collective approach from government, industry and the research community to transform the UK economy through the power of bioscience and biotechnology. It aims to make the UK a global leader in the development, manufacture, use and export of bio-based solutions by 2030.

Julian Braybrook, Director of Measurement and Government Chemist said: “We are pleased to see the government’s commitment to the growing the bioeconomy and look forward to the implementation of this strategy.”

In particular we welcome the focus within the strategy on the need to identify the areas in which standards and regulations can make a positive difference to the bioeconomy and on the need for a highly skilled and cross-cutting workforce.

The measurement frameworks developed by the NML will help support efforts within the standards and regulatory space, ensuring we have a trusted regulatory environment in which regulators, investors and the public have confidence in the novel products, processes and services being developed.

Through our involvement in CAMS (Community for Analytical Measurement Science), we are supporting the collaboration between government, academia and further education bodies to help ensure the UK has a workforce with the right skill set to enable growth in this key area.
