LGC scientist elected Associate Member of IUPAC Commission of Isotopic Abundances and Atomic Weights

Dr. Philip Dunn, Senior Researcher in the Inorganic Analysis Team and Chair of the Forensic Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (FIRMS) network has been elected an Associate Member of the IUPAC Commission of Isotopic Abundances and Atomic Weights (CIAAW), making him only the ninth person with the UK affiliation since 1902.

In addition, Phil has been elected to join the Sub-committee on Stable Isotope Reference Material Assessment which will be producing the next IUPAC Technical report on isotope ratio reference material assessment. His role will officially begin in January 2018.

Phil’s invitation to this prestigious body recognises his expertise and LGC’s reputation in this field.

Formally established in 1899, the CIAAW remains one of the oldest continuously serving scientific bodies, currently charged with the critical evaluation and dissemination of the atomic weights. It was created in order to introduce uniformity in the atomic-weight values used worldwide and remains a widely recognised authority in the area of isotope ratio measurement.

Since the establishment of the International Atomic Weights Commission in 1899, six members, including Marie Curie have been awarded the Nobel Prize. The Commission operates under the auspices of the Inorganic Chemistry Division of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).
