LGC announces the release of a new certified reference material: Electronic Cigarette Liquid – Nicotine and Water

In its capacity as the UK National Measurement Laboratory, LGC is proud to announce the release of a new certified reference material (CRM) Electronic Cigarette Liquid – Nicotine and Water (ERM®-DZ002a).

The use of e-cigarettes and vaping has become increasingly popular both within the UK and globally. The Tobacco Products Directive, new EU legislation which came into force in May 2016, restricts the concentration of nicotine within nicotine-containing electronic cigarettes and refill containers (otherwise known as e-liquids) to a maximum of 20 mg/mL. This directive was implemented in the UK through the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016.  Consequently, laboratory interest in acquiring method accreditation to determine levels of nicotine in e-liquids has increased, as has the need for a reference material to support method validation and quality control. LGC’s release of this nicotine in e-liquid material (ERM®-DZ002a) provides the product to meet this new customer demand.

ERM®-DZ002a was certified for the concentration of nicotine in an e-liquid at a level close to legislative limits as well as for water content. Both values were determined using in-house analytical methods accredited to ISO/IEC 17025.

This material has been accepted as a European Reference Material (ERM®) following peer-review, with homogeneity and short term stability studies carried out.

The intended use of this material is for validation and quality control of methods for the determination of nicotine and water content in e-liquids. It can also be used in the training and evaluation of staff.

This new certified reference material is available from LGC Standards.
