Every DNA counts – and we would know

Blog - The UK National Measurement Laboratory at LGC turned 30 years old this year, and to celebrate we’ve been looking back at notable accomplishments, and looking at where we are now. Clinical measurement is one field where our scientists have excelled and innovated throughout our time.

Making a mountain out of a Mole Day

Blog - Today is Mole Day, chemists’ #1 holiday! Mole Day occurs every year on October 23 from 6:02am to 6:02pm to commemorate Avogadro’s Number and the basic measuring unit of chemistry, the mole.

Christmas, candles and the countdown to the SI redefinition

Blog - Perhaps unsurprisingly, the candela was originally based on the light of a candle – but a definition based on something so variable was not good enough for measurement scientists. The candela, or ‘the new candle’, replaced candle-based definitions in 1948. In 1979 the modern definition of the candela was adopted:

The least stressful option for patients with Parkinson's

Blog - In the absence of a cure for Parkinson’s, patients themselves have identified improved management of stress and anxiety as the second highest priority for unmet research needs to improve their quality of life. Measuring cortisol has been suggested as a potential alternative and objective way to measure stress

Countdown to the SI redefinition: How long would it take to eat a mole of Easter eggs?

Blog - This month we are focusing on a unit that has particular significance to chemists and therefore, our scientists at the UK National Measurement Laboratory at LGC: the mole, the unit used to measure the (usually very large) number of things, usually atoms or molecules
