Government and academia

LGC is unique in hosting a number of national roles including the Government Chemist function, the National Measurement Laboratory and Designated Institute (DI) for chemical and bio-measurement, and the National Reference Laboratories for a number of areas. In our Government Chemist function we provide scientific advice and analytical services in areas such as food and agriculture, health and pharmaceuticals. Our role as a National Measurement Laboratory and Designated Institute defines our credibility at the forefront of science and innovation and allows us to offer unparalleled expertise on matters relating to policy, regulation and global measurement challenges.

LGC has a long history of supporting UK government and regulatory agencies in important work related to crime prevention, national security, consumer protection and public health. We provide a broad range of chemical, bioanalytical and forensic services to departments including the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS), the Medicines and Healthcare Products  Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the Department of Health (DoH), the Home Office, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and the Minstry of Defence (MoD).
