Every year, LGC supports a charity chosen by our employees. Since 2010, we have donated over £145,000 to charity – the totals each year being boosted by LGC matching any funds raised through team-building events. Amounts raised in fundraising events which brought our employees together have been also generously matched by our investors. Our 'charity of the year' partnerships are established with charities that demonstrate links to our business activities and have an international reach to reflect our global footprint.
In 2016-17, we are fundraising for the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) association, also commonly known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s Disease in the USA. It is a fatal, rapidly progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting. MND can leave people locked in a failing body, unable to move, talk, swallow and eventually breathe. A person’s lifetime risk of developing the disease is 1 in 300 and MND kills a third of people within a year and more than half within two years of diagnosis.
