LGC scientist invited to present at NIST Microbiome Workshop

Dr Denise O’Sullivan, Senior Researcher in the Cell and Molecular Biology Team
, Science & Innovation, was invited to present at the Standards for Microbiome Measurements Workshop
held at NIST, Gaithersburg, MD, USA on 9-10 August 2016.
To help realise the full potential of the human microbiome – the complex microbial communities that exist in the human body – for therapeutics and clinical diagnostic applications, there is a need to identify and eliminate measurement bias throughout the microbiome measurement process and hence improve the comparability of results between laboratories.
This two day workshop at NIST brought together over 250 experts from research institutes, industry and standardisation organisations to discuss and define the relevant reference materials, reference methods and reference data for human microbiome measurements to support this need.
Denise presented work performed by the Molecular Biology Team
at LGC on understanding the inherent errors associated with different microbial profiling methods. Using control materials developed in-house she demonstrated how this approach can evaluate the impact of sample processing, molecular method and data analysis and ultimately enable researchers to select and evaluate appropriate protocols for measuring the metagenome.
