The National Measurement System, funded by the Department of Business, Innovation & Skills, is a network of laboratories that provide measurement standards, and calibration and testing facilities. The National Measurement System maintains the measurement infrastructure, represents the position of UK measurement internationally, and influences the development of standards.
LGC makes up a key component of the National Measurement System through our designated National Measurement Institute and Government Chemist roles. We also serve as a National Reference Laboratory in a number of key areas.
Under the National Measurement System, we manage and deliver research under three programmes:
Chemical & Biological Metrology Programme
Research to improve chemical and bioanalytical measurements
Addressing measurement needs for emerging technologies
Government Chemist Programme
Research to support regulation of food, animal feed and consumer products
LGC operates out of 22 countries, with laboratories and centres across Europe and the US, as well as sites in Brazil, China and India.
