Regulatory activities

Overview

LGC's Science & Technology Division has a very strong role in providing UK Government with regulatory support. The division houses the function of the Government Chemist, a role which involves acting as an independent and impartial referee analyst in cases of dispute and advising the UK Government and the wider analytical community on the analytical chemistry implications of policy, standards and regulations.

LGC has been testing bovine brain stem samples for the presence of abnormal prion proteins, the indicator of BSE infection, since 2001.  Initially under contract to the Department of Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), but since January 2009 directly for the industry, LGC provides BSE testing from its laboratories in Edinburgh, Runcorn and Exeter.  We offer streamlined, efficient and timely services to our abattoir customers, which are continually developed to better meet their demands.

LGC has provided environmental testing services to the public and private sectors for many years; our current areas of specialisation are radiochemistry, testing of materials in contact with drinking water and environmental surveys, and safety advice including surveying and testing for asbestos.
