ParaDNA Systems are being used around the world helping investigators gain fast, actionable intelligence whilst providing cost savings and improving submissions policies. The following user examples are from live casework scenarios where ParaDNA technology has been employed.

Case examples using the ParaDNA Intelligence Test:
 
 
  • A gas station burglary was under investigation by Osceola County Sheriff’s Office when reports of a second burglary were received. Detectives en route spotted a vehicle matching an eyewitness description and detained the 3 male occupants. Sample collectors were used to sub-sample collected evidence from the vehicle, gas station and from the premises of a 3rd burglary had recently occurred. Under court order, all 3 suspects provided buccal swabs. ParaDNA Intelligence Test results significantly reduced investigation time, allowing all 3 cases to be closed quickly, with DNA samples selected for State lab processing confidently chosen with a clear expectation of the outcome.

  • Homicide: 12 cigarettes were found at the scene of the crime, all of which were processed using the ParaDNA Intelligence Test.  This led to a cost saving of over $5000 as using ParaDNA allowed for 2 cigarettes to be singled out for full STR profiling as they matched ‘persons of interests’ reference profiles.

  • Burglary: A sample from a burglary in a dwelling was processed using the ParaDNA Intelligence Test. A DNA profile was obtained and searched against the UK National DNA Database. Within 24 hours, a list of possible matches was returned with one name in particular being consistent with other intelligence obtained during the investigation. The investigating officers went to the address of the suspect and found the property of the victim. The force stated: ParaDNA saved many hours of investigation and enabled the recovery of personal belongings that really mattered to the owner”.
  • Sexual Assault: A suspect was seen smoking a rolled cigarette earlier in the evening outside a party. Whilst analyzing the scene of the assault, detectives observed a similar cigarette near the doorway. The ParaDNA Intelligence Test was able to show that these cigarettes had been smoked by the same person and using this information the police force were able to attain a warrant for the suspects buccal sample. This sample was matched to the cigarettes.

  • Burglary: Two drinks cans were left at the scene of a burglary of firearms. The ParaDNA Intelligence Test was used to presumptively match the profile from the drinks can to the suspect and the results were used to obtain a buccal warrant.

Case examples using the ParaDNA Screening Test:
  • Vehicle Theft: A stolen caravan was found and recovered by the force. They used the ParaDNA Screening Test to analyze 3 drinks vessels found inside the vehicle which obtained 39%, 13% and 0% scores. All 3 samples were also sent for full profiling as part of an initial testing period. The 39% and 13% results led to two unique full profiles being generated during STR analysis. The 0% result produced a non-usable profile.

  • Burglary: A vehicle suspected to have been used in a burglary was discovered and a tool and drinks vessel were collected from inside. Prior to ParaDNA, only the drinks vessel would have been sent for DNA profiling as this would have been expected to be more DNA rich than the tool. Using the ParaDNA Screening Test, the tool produced a 64% result and the drinks vessel 13%. The tool was selected to be profiled first and produced a full profile which led to a hit on the National DNA Database. The drinks vessel was also submitted for STR profiling as part of an initial testing period and returned a partial profile which could not be used.
 
  • Vehicle Theft: A stolen vehicle was recovered that was linked to a known male suspect. The force would previously have sent all 6 samples from the case to a forensic laboratory for analysis however they used the ParaDNA Screening Test to triage out unusable samples. Out of the 6 samples, 4 gave positive results with male DNA detected (including a firearm recovered from the vehicle). This meant by screening out the 2 negative results the user saved $2000 on a single case.
 
  • Burglary: A cigarette was found at the scene of a burglary in a poor condition (wet on top of a bin). This exhibit would not have normally been submitted due to the condition it was found in. The ParaDNA Screening Test produced a positive result, and the cigarette returned a full profile with STR processing.
